He is Risen
by General Presbyter Melana Scruggs
Hoping you had a blessed celebration of the Day of Resurrection! The day that defines our hope, strength, and call and the day that we remember every Sunday when we worship is our most joyous celebration. The proclamation “He is Risen” defines us as followers of Christ, those who believe that his coming has changed the world and all of us forever. We cannot yet see the fullness of God’s victory, but we can live into the love of Christ and show it in our actions so that we move closer to that fullness.
The gospel text for Easter this year was the Mark passage in which the women wonder as they head to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body, who will move the stone for them. When they arrive they are surprised to see it already rolled away and a young man in a white robe sitting in the tomb. They were alarmed, which I can understand, and even after the man gives them a message to share with Peter and the disciples, they are so afraid that they flee from the tomb and say nothing to anyone. What I love about the Bible is that I can see myself in those in the story. I can imagine being so afraid that I wouldn’t say anything – probably mostly afraid that someone would think I was crazy.
Fortunately, that is not the end of the gospel and certainly not the end of the story. Jesus appeared to some of those who had followed him, and they began to tell others who believed and began to learn about Jesus. We are still called to tell others and so many need to hear the message. Thank you for the work you do to spread the good news of love and grace in the world. Thank you for the compassionate work you do with those who are vulnerable. We are able to do so much together in faith.
He is Risen! He is Risen indeed!
