May 2024 Presbytery Meeting Recap

Peace River Presbytery met at First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs on May 16, 2024.  The meeting was conducted with grace and patience by Moderator Teaching Elder Laurie Haas, one of the pastors at Church of the Palms.   General Presbyter Teaching Elder Melana Scruggs reminded us that the Presbytery Newsletter and the Presbytery Website are the primary sources for information and meeting notices.  We heard from the Stated Clerk/Executive for Synod of South Atlantic, Ruling Elder Valerie Young.  Teaching Elder Scott Andrews, Pastor of Community Presbyterian Church in Englewood preached for worship and administered the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper with Teaching Elder Brad Rogers, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs.

Peace River Presbytery recognized the ordination of the Reverend Miguel Estrada from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Guatemala and received him as a member of Peace River Presbytery (PCUSA).   Pastor Miguel is our Presbytery Evangelist at Mision Peniel.  He began serving in this position in 2013.

Other significant actions approved at the meeting are:

  • Dissolved the Administrative Commission for Moorings Presbyterian Church
  • Voted to dissolve Chapel By the Sea, Fort Myers Beach, effective September 30, 2024
  • Approved an Administrative Commission to ordain Nicole Jiskoot as a Teaching Elder.
  • Approved an Anti-Racism Policy.
  • Approved a Policy Prohibiting Harassment.
  • Elected the following people to serve on committees and mission partners:
    • Teaching Elder Edward Dunn (United, Bradenton) to the Committee on Ministry (2026)
    • Ruling Elder Eric Homeister (Church of the Palms, Sarasota) to Florida Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Network (2025)

Moderator TE Laurie Hass, General Presbyter TE Melana Scruggs, and Stated Clerk TE Randy Moody led a Commissioning Service for Peace River Presbytery’s Commissioners and Young Adult Advisory Delegate the 226th General Assembly in Salt Lake City:

  • RE Sandra Asaro (First Presbyterian Church, Port Charlotte)
  • RE Roy Lipsett (Buckingham Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers)
  • TE Jaco Bester (Burnt Store Presbyterian Church, Punta Gorda)
  • TE Ruth Smalt (Siesta Key Chapel, Sarasota)
  • Morgan Wilson (Church of the Palms, Sarasota)

The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance made a presentation about their work, including an update on construction progress and the selection of the first residents.  Peace River Presbytery has been involved in this ministry from its inception.
