The Rev. Dr. Margaret Towner Stole Project

History of Stole Project

In 2021, Rev. Dr. Margaret Towner, “Marg,” had a luncheon for the women clergy in Peace River Presbytery, as she usually does at least annually, luncheon for those she endearingly calls, her spiritual daughters.  We had the opportunity to share fellowship with one another and hear Marg’s unique story that has shaped so many of our lives and callings.  Out of that luncheon, an idea emerged – to design, commission, and create a stole in her honor.

After brainstorming with many women clergy in our presbytery, a sketch of a stole was submitted to Karen Edenfield of MyThreadSays, who was commissioned to polish our design and make a stole.  She did a beautiful job, capturing Marg’s story, our story, and all of our callings having been led by her.

The stole is available for all to purchase.  As further collaboration continued, a vision was developed to present the Rev. Dr. Margaret Towner Stole to newly ordained and installed clergy women in Peace River Presbytery.

Symbolism of The Rev. Dr. Margaret Towner Stole

The stole honors the creative, bold and inspirational calling to ministry of the Rev. Dr. Margaret Towner, “Marg.”  On October 24, 1956 she became the first woman to be ordained as Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church shepherding many spiritual daughters as they followed in their own call to ministry.

A word about the stole.   Inspired by Psalm 100 and Margaret’s love of music, the colorful figures are playfully dancing and rejoicing as they followed Marg on the path that she has blazed and defined.  She is guided by the Holy Spirit as she leads her daughters in their faithful journey serving the Lord.
