February 2023 Synod Meeting Highlights

STATED MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

FEBRUARY 23-25, 2023

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GEORGIA

  • The Synod welcomed our new Synod Executive and Stated Clerk, Valerie Young.  In her report, Valerie voiced her goal of regathering and empowering the Synod team to live out the Synod’s vision in new and different ways.
  • A conversation with Valerie Young and Moderator David Shelor discussed the role of the Synod, challenges ahead, and her top priority of meeting and visiting with leaders.
  • We danced and danced!
  • Meeting attendees shared events, successes, joys and prayer needs of their churches and presbyteries. The EAC will pray over those in the coming weeks.
  • The body approved the election of the following Synod Permanent Judicial Commission Members (SPJC): Virgil Marshall, (TEBM), Flint River; Donna Wells, TEWF, Greater Atlanta, and Evelyn White (REBF), Charleston-Atlantic.
  • The Synod welcomed the Rev. Ruth Faith Santana-Grace as the Keynote Speaker for the meeting.  Friday’s Keynote was a panel discussion in response to questions, and included the Rev. Dr. Victor Aloyo, President, Columbia Theological Seminary, and the Rev. Cindy Kohlmann, Connectional Presbyter/Stated Clerk, New Castle Presbytery, and Co-Moderator of the 223rd General Assembly.
  • The Rev. Dr. Victor Aloyo preached about loving our enemies and led the body in communion after the Installation of Valerie to her new role. 
  • Saturday’s keynote discussed the church’s “Current Cultural Context Uncharted,” looking at the landscape of the PCUSA, its leadership challenges, and a re-formation from the wilderness.
